T

he growing season is here, and

everyone wants those locally grown

fruits and vegetables.Where is fresh

produce sold, besides a grocery

store? Where are the farmers?

These are often the questions that are asked

before a consumer starts investigating opportunities

to purchase locally grown produce. Many times

a consumer doesn’t feel they have the time to

run to a farmers market to pick up produce

and then still have time to go to the grocery

store. In today’s busy world it can sometimes

be hard for consumers to identify the many

incorporate produce into healthy meals.

Working with a farm that has a Consumer

Supported Agriculture (CSA) program is a great

opportunity. The consumer pays the farmer in

the early spring for produce that they are just

planting, and they will receive a weekly share

of that produce for several weeks over the

summer months in many cases. Some farms

also have winter CSA’s and fall CSA’s if the

The best part of this is the farm will even provide

recipes for produce that the consumer may not

be as familiar with. The produce is also picked

at the peak of ripeness, which is tastier and

healthier for the consumer. Shares are typically

picked up once a week and in some cases

include breads, jams, eggs, cheese and meats.
