took on a full-time position and lived on
the farm. When Horizon Organic Dairy
took over the old Naval Dairy Farm
and partnered with the county to lease
it for the UMD Extension, Dave found
himself back at his old roots. In 2013,
Extension was finally all moved into the
old milking barn he worked in when he
was younger. He began planting hops
when he heard of the erupting trend
with breweries. “Hops are easy to grow
but hard to handle and harvest,” says
Dave. Dave also believes, “Fresh hops
and aromatic hops are going to be really
a signature of the Mid-Atlantic region.”
Dave’s emphasis on fruit and vegetable
production makes him especially
excited that the brew masters are
experimenting with different fruit and
vegetables in the beer. Brew masters
are working with fruits especially to
add another aspect to the creativity
involved in crafting the perfect beer.
Recently, Dave said he tried a rye
beer and it was excellent. There is
so much brew masters can do for
the fruits aspects. He also hopes to
see ciders, such as apple, take off.
A hops action team with the University
of Maryland Extension is soon to come
with all the progress hops are making.
The hops action team hopes to join up
with other professionals in the Mid-
Atlantic region. Plans are also in the
works for bigger cooperatives such as
the North East Hops Alliance. Dave
loves to see that the hops industry is
taking off in Maryland and believes
the distilleries are following behind.
