ecoming a winemaker is a dream that has often seemed out
of reach for many wine enthusiasts. The land, the facilities, the
staff, the know-how—it all seems too expensive and daunting
to even consider taking part.
Maryland Wine Cellars in Westminster is trying to change all of that.
According to Drew Baker, whose family owns Maryland Wine Cellars
as well as Old Westminster Winery, it was only within the past few years
that it became legal for winemakers in Maryland to share equipment and
resources in an effort to lower the costs of production. But he says the
concept has been in practice elsewhere for a very long time.
“If we look around the world, mature wine industries have been
cooperating forever,” he said. “If you look to France, for example,
