January 3, 1904, students of
color had their first chance for
an education in southern Carroll
County during the days of
segregation. The Town of Sykesville
has restored and furnished the
historic one-room schoolhouse to its
1904 appearance, but today teaches
area children of all ethnicities and
ages. Open by appointment.

has functioned as a small mill
village and farming community,
weathered a Civil War and two
World Wars, charted new territory as
a growing rail town, seen Victorian
splendor as a summer respite
and served as a bustling 20th
century Main Street. The Museum
strives to interpret the abundant
history of historic Sykesville and
its surrounding communities
through its collections, exhibits
and special events. A wide variety
of papers, furniture, photographs,
clothing, business ephemera, Native
American artifacts, and personal
effects help to tell the story of
an ever-changing community.

Union Mills Homestead
and Grist Mill

historic country estate includes
the Homestead, which is filled
with original furnishings and
family possessions belonging
to six generations of the Shriver
family; multiple outbuildings;
and a working grist mill, with
demonstrations of grinding grain
into flour by water power. The
mill produces stoneground whole
wheat, buckwheat, and cornmeal,
which are available for purchase
in the gift shop. In addition, the
Homestead hosts several events
throughout the year: the Annual
(over 40 years) Flower & Plant
Market, a Civil War Encampment,
the Annual (over 40 years, too!)
Corn Roast Festival, and the
Maryland Microbrewery Festival.

collection of Western Maryland
Railway artifacts and memorabilia,
a voluminous photo archive,
archival material directly from the
Western Maryland Railroad, and
an extensive railroader’s library
featuring historical and technical
publications about the WM and the
other railroads of the region. Free
admission, donations are welcome.
