If you and your loved one don’t get a break—a break from routine, a change of location, and a chance to speak and visit with others, the stress may increase and then boredom and unhappiness sets in. What can you do? How do you arrange for fun and interesting activities for your loved one? How can you get away to enjoy your own activities? OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR MY LOVED ONE Howard County Office on Aging and Independence operates three (3) therapeutic, social day programs for adults aged 50 and over, which are licensed by the Maryland Department of Aging. Howard County’s Connections Social Day Programs are located within the Ellicott City 50+ Center, North Laurel 50+ Center and the Glenwood 50+ Center. Programming All therapeutic programs and activities are designed to encourage the independence of participants while providing assistance and oversight as needed. Whether the participant has cognitive and/or physical impairments, trained staff members provide a fun, interesting set of activities; a hot, nourishing noontime meal; snacks; entertainment; and a chance to socialize with peers. Examples of programs include: • Therapeutic exercise • Music/Dance • Art therapy • Memory enhancement activities • Nutrition education/Cooking • Games • Intergenerational activities The social component of the program is of utmost importance. Even those individuals who were not usually “joiners” enjoy the camaraderie and the opportunities for fun, creativity, and more.
