Its mission is to promote successful aging in Howard County. The Commission works with county government and interest groups to advocate for programs and resources that support older persons and their families. Additionally, the Commission supports and encourages active opportunities for experienced older adults to share their talents and skills in meaningful ways while continuing to support programs and services for the most vulnerable in our County. The Commission accomplishes its work through the activities of task forces and committees and is particularly interested in wellness programs, housing, transportation, and financial independence. The Commission researches legislation at the county and state level that impacts the health and well-being of older adults and their families, and provides testimony when appropriate. Commissioners are nominated by the County Executive, confirmed by the County Council for a five year term and may serve two consecutive terms. Members of the Commission represent diverse professional backgrounds, various age and ethnic groups, and many geographic areas of the county. Commissioners serve on many other county boards and commissions and the Maryland Commission on Aging.
