Dear Fellow Parents,
Welcome to the 2017 Parent’s Guide presented by Howard County’s Department of Community
Resources and Services and its Office of Children and Families. This user-friendly, comprehensive
guide has been designed to provide parents and caregivers with valuable tools and up-to-date
information about available resources to help our children and youth reach their full potential.
As a proud parent of four wonderful children, Haley, Mary, Robby and James, my wife Robin and I are
no different from other parents – we have high hopes and dreams for our children and want them
to succeed. While the rewards of parenting are great, many families encounter challenges along
the way and need to know where to seek help. When that happens, parents can turn to this guide
for useful information on topics ranging from health care to recreation to education programs.
In addition, I invite you to help me recognize those who have made a difference in the
lives of our youth my nominating them today through the first week of March for our
“Celebrating Successes for Children” awards program. This annual awards program
recognizes teachers, child care providers, coaches, youth and others who have had a
positive impact on children of all ages. This is your chance to nominate someone that
has gone above and beyond for your family and highlight the great work they do.
To learn more about Celebrating Successes or if you still have questions about
resources available to you, please contact our CARE line at 410-313-CARE (2273)
to speak with an information specialist. Our information specialists are a great
resource and can respond directly to the unique needs of your family.
In closing, I want to thank the Office of Children and Families for the work they do
to provide direct services, information, referral and education to our families with
children, helping to make Howard County such a wonderful place to live.
